I’ve really enjoyed the rebooted series. I love how mean and gory these films are, and Evil Dead Burn comes back to become the third installment in an increasingly consistent series of movies that are so fun. As consistent as it is, I feel like this movie suffers from shoddy CGI effects and writing issues. There are instances in this movie that I think we just didn’t need, like the giant twerking ass and the third shot to the head, and there are moments that don’t feel very Evil Dead to me. 

First off, I really enjoyed the practical effects and cinematography of this film. The car fight scene and the long panning scene where Alice is crawling on the floor were really good scenes and they weren’t too overloaded either. I loved the way the deadite makeup looked in this film as well. The car head rest and the bashed in head were great examples of practical effects working well here. The car scene is probably one of my favorite evil dead scenes to date. I wish they wouldn’t have spoiled Ashley getting her fingers cut off in the trailer.

I think the humor in the film both works and doesn’t work at the same time. The taunting that deadites do in the film sounds more like they should be in a “Nightmare on Elm Street” flick than an Evil Dead one. It may be the obsessive use of the word “bitch”, and it may be just me, but it didn’t hit as well for me. 

I also feel like there was too much of a focus on the “abused wife” thing. We only needed to see the bruise once. We only needed to see the flashback once. It felt like the director was just trying to baby us through it like “OKAY SO HE WAS A SHIT HUSBAND AND THIS IS WHY. SEE? DID YOU SEE IT?” I definitely do feel sympathy for Alice, and the film does a good job at making you feel bad for her, but the audience isn’t stupid. We don’t need to see the same flashback three times. I also thought it was stupid that the deadites were only there on basically a treasure hunt. The incantation wasn’t even finished. 

These characters are so well played that I genuinely was getting pissed off as things unfolded. The men in this family are absolutely useless and the women are classic enablers. I would hate to have these people as in-laws. Alice and Thya are the only acceptable people here, and they’re spouses. 

My biggest gripe of the film is the CGI effects. Everything else in the movie looked so good right up until Will comes back in his deadite form. It looks BAD.
